FontBook
11/01/12
I love my iPad, it rarely leaves my side now. Thankfully my wife has grown to love it too, so early accusations of her becoming an iPad-widow have now faded.
When they first came out, I, like many others, despite wanting one 'just because', questioned what I'd actually use it for. I have a MacBookPro for working on and an iPhone for calls and games, so the iPad seemed little more than surplus to my requirements - it couldn't do calls (this was before FaceTime) and it couldn't handle the sort of software I'd need for work. How wrong I was. Now my laptop sits idly on a shelf at home, only getting powered up occasionally when my wife refuses to relinquish the iPad. And the iPhone has become just that, a phone.
One of the apps I use a lot (and at £3.99 is one of the relatively more expensive ones available) is FontBook™, a wonderful online resource of over 600,000 typeface specimens. You can search by name, style, designer name, even year first created. You can also create a favourites list and dynamically compare fonts. And the latest update just released (5th January) has added a news section and a usage section.
Hopefully future updates will include the chance of reading bios on the designers themselves, but for now it still remains an essential iPad app for anyone with even just a passing interest in typography.
