The ability to paint dreams
09/03/12

It was with extreme sadness I learnt of the death of Ralph McQuarrie last Saturday. To many his name will mean little, but for me - a child of the 70's and early 80's - his influence on popular culture and the films I grew up with was immense. His vision, his talent and imagination styled the look and feel of some of the most popular films of the time. He is most noted for Star Wars, the series of films which brought his work to my attention, but he was also instrumental in crafting the look for Battlestar Galactic, Cocoon, for which he won an Oscar, and the spaceship in ET.
George Lucas paid this glowing tribute, "When words could not convey my ideas, I could always point to one of Ralph's fabulous illustrations and say 'do it like this'."

RIP Ralph McQuarrie, my childhood would not have been the same without you.
