Unlocking success with front-of-pack nutrition labelling

In June 2022, Health Canada announced a significant amendment to the Food and Drug Regulations: the introduction of Front-of-Pack (FOP) nutrition labelling. This means that, from 1st January 2026, packaged foods high in saturated fats, sugars, and/or sodium must feature a specific symbol on the front of their packaging.

The introduction of FOP nutrition labelling presents a substantial challenge for brands. However, such a regulatory shift also creates an opportunity for forward-thinking brands to go beyond compliance and strategically rethink and enhance their packaging. It is a chance to align more closely with consumer health trends and preferences and stand out in a crowded market.

OUR WEBINAR ON FOP LABELLING AND CONSUMER PACKAGING PROVIDED ESSENTIAL GUIDANCE ON CANADA’S NEW NUTRITION LABELLING REQUREMENTS

Speakers explored how brands could transform regulatory challenges into opportunities. We discussed how FOP labelling tells an incomplete story, and why brands need foresight and strategy to mitigate negative impact through reformulation, repositioning or redesign.

Key takeaways included four proven approaches: reformulating products to meet health expectations, repositioning brand messaging, redesigning packaging for seamless integration, and using counter communication to give consumers valuable context. The session also highlighted the importance of early portfolio reviews, ensuring consistency across SKUs, and locking in production plans well ahead of the 2026 deadline.
